A life-size replica of a 1973 Viscount Royal caravan, built with nearly 300,000 Lego bricks in Queensland, has broken a Guinness World Records title for the world’s largest Lego caravan.

Caravanning Queensland and caravan park group Top Parks beat the previous title holder by 73,472 bricks.

The Lego caravan featuring a double bed, wardrobe and cupboards with sliding drawers, was built by a team of up to 20 people from Queensland and interstate, using 288,630 bricks.

Avid caravanner and brick builder Ben Craig said the project was not without its difficulties as they pushed the capabilities of Lego bricks.

“We started off with 300,000 Lego bricks ordered from 40 different suppliers, which was a challenge in itself,” he said.

“At first I thought making the windows woudl be hard because they’re very large on both ends but what surprised me was building the roof.

“We thought it would take one week but it turned into five weeks.

“No-one has done a roof this thin or big before so it took a while to get the engineering right from the model without it toppling over.

“It had to flex and move as all caravans do on the road and the Lego roof had to support its own weight.”

Mr Craig said the project was unique in that people could not only view the Lego caravan, but could also walk inside, sit down on a chair and open the fridge, which was also made from Lego.

Guinness World Records judge Brian Sobel said he was impressed the entrants went above and beyond the basic requirements, praising the team for their creativity.

“The caravan had functioning electricity and the Lego sink had running water,” he said.

“The entry had to have the same amenities that the particular caravan had so I enjoyed the small details they added like a bottle of Vegemite and scrambled eggs on the table, the fridge had milk and cheese and the bedspread was Lego.”

Caravanning Queensland general manager Jason Plant said they always wanted to do something on a grand scale.

“It’s fantastic to be part of a project that will connect two great family activities – Lego and holidaying – and shed a new light on caravanning and camping in Queensland with a Guinness World Records title,” he said.

Top Parks head David Smith said the Viscount van symbolised, for many Australians in the ’70s and ’80s, family caravanning.

“Manufacturing has come a long way since then, but you still can’t go past hooking a caravan on and exploring the outback,” he said.

“Over the coming months, we hope to see the caravan hit the road, visiting key destinations in our extensive network of parks.”

The caravan will be on display at the Brisbane Holiday Village in Eight Mile Plains until Friday before it begins a tour around the country with Top Parks.
