9 Winter Holiday Activities The Kids Will Enjoy in the Holidays!

Ditching the books for a couple of weeks and heading home for the school holidays is super exciting for the kids! There are so many fun holiday activities to look forward to and it is such a relief for the entire family to break free from the routine. As your child walks out of school on the last day of term, they are likely fantasising about all the cool activities they can do! Like LEGO®!

Every child will look forward to something different depending on what they enjoy. For some an action-packed holiday is exciting and for other children playing at home and chilling with friends is their idea of fun. Whatever you guys do in the upcoming holiday we are sure it is bound to be enjoyable. Here are a few ways some are excited to spend their time during the winter holidays:

1. A Time for Adventure 🧗

School holidays provide an opportunity for discovering, exploring, and creating! Children will enjoy conjuring up a new creation to be able to roleplay and experiment. It is a time to get building; build that backyard garden, treehouse, billy cart, or get experimenting with the drone!

Adventure parks also operate every day during the school holidays, Tree Top Adventure Park in Newcastle and the Central Coast offers aerial obstacles with junior courses your young children will be focused on and happy doing for hours (2.5). This is playful fun for the less blustery sunny winter days.

Family bushwalks are great in the winter as you will not get overheated like you can in the summer. Newcastle and the Central Coast have loads of trails to check out with the kids. Allow them to explore and instill a love of the natural world.

2. A Time for Holiday Excitement ⛷️

Snowboarding, skiing, winter camping, north sunshine, or visiting family and friends locally or abroad many of us will take the time out by getting out of town. Nothing is more thrilling than a winter vacation, as it warms the heart and mind. “People don’t notice whether it’s winter or summer when they’re happy.” Having a vacation planned is the ultimate abandonment of responsibility and welcome of happy memories that we can leave our children with.

3. A Time for Doing What You Love 💖

The thought of all that time with no homework, school to go to, afterschool activities is the best. Kids are free for days to be able to pursue their personal hobbies and interests. Time for soccer with the family down at the park? Ice-skating has captured your child’s imagination, why not take them to a disco night at Hunter Ice Skating and Erina Ice Skating rink?

Kids are bound to be occupied for hours around a hobby that interests them so if you need to get them away from the electronics focusing on another activity, they love this is a clever way to get their attention! Spending the time in the holidays developing a hobby that could become a lifelong interest is a beneficial use of time.

4. A Time for Winter Solstice 🕯️

Winter solstice is on 21 June, as the days get darker and nights longer, we get closer to solstice which is the longest night of the year. It has been celebrated for generations since Roman times and it is seen as a time of celebration because although we are in the coldest winter night of the season, it also represents the return to the sun as each day after 21 June will become brighter and the nights shorter as we move towards summer.

The winter solstice holds importance to many cultures and traditions. Many homes will light a yellow candle to symbolise the sun and humanity moving away from darkness to light and to gather with loved ones to celebrate new beginnings. It is a time to cook your warming winter foods, to spend time gathered as family crafting, singing, telling stories or poems and for practicing gratitude. Here are a few winter solstice activities you can do with the kids.

“We give thanks for the blessing of winter, a season to cherish the heart, to make warmth and quiet for the heart, to make soup and broth for the heart, to cook for the heart and read for the heart, to curl up softly and nestle with the heart,  to dream with the heart,  to spend time with the heart,  a long long time with peace with the heart, we give thanks for the blessing of winter, a season to cherish the heart.”

5.  A Time for The Great Outdoors ⛰️

Spending time in the outdoors and getting some winter sunshine is so good for everyone’s health. We are lucky to live in a country where sunshine is ever present. Rug up your children in winter layers, get out of the house to enjoy this ideal activity for the whole family. Grab your family some picnic goodies and head to a hiking trail, coastal walk or outdoor activity that interests.

Breathe deeply that fresh oxygenated air and feel the glimpses of the wind and sun on your face to feel revived by nature’s energy. This is one-holiday activity with the kids you will feel energised by! There are many benefits to enjoying the great outdoors such as improved physical health, better mental health, and better relationships.

6.  A Time for Chillin’ 🎲

Who does not love to kick their feet up and just hang out! After a busy term, some kids really look forward to a less busy schedule. Some kids thrive on busyness while others really could do with some quiet time. Spending time at home hanging out with family and siblings is calming and it helps kids reconnect with you and what is important. Kids need downtime too. Time at home will allow your child to play freely and to unwind, connecting them back to their creative happy selves. Winter is also a time for comfort and warmth at home.

There are many benefits to spending time at home;

  1. Spending quality time with loved ones as you allow time to connect through cooking, family games or movie night or simply by simply being together.
  2. Creativity flourishes at home when we are in a relaxed state. Staying at home and scheduling less allows us to unwind and de-stress opening pathways to our creative brain.
  3. Kids engaged at home are more likely to grow up to be adults who can engage in domestic chores. It will help with them learn organisational skills.
  4. Nurturing little green thumbs is a bonus of spending time at home, spending time in the garden will help them appreciate nature and they will learn how to garden.
  5. Develop their education in the holidays through hobbies like crafts and puzzles and LEGO which provide STEM learning opportunities.

7. A Time for Nanna Cakes 🧁

Many kids with working parents will have grandparents’ step in and help with the holiday care. Yes, the kids might get spoilt a little too much with too many delicious cupcakes and cookies testing all your rules, but they will also get cared for by those who care most. When the grandparents spend time with their grandchild, they can bond with them and be become an active part of their development.

The holiday with the grandparents is a wonderful way to deepen relationships between them and the kids. Often kids will listen to grandparents, and they can reinforce some learnings you wish the kids to understand as the kids are happy to listen to the stories grandparents will share often with a lesson behind it. The holidays are always fun at nans and pops as kids are engaged in domestic activities!

8. A Time For Mates Playdates 😊

When I asked my child what she looked forward to in the holidays the first thing she said was playdates. Playdates are great for the kids and great for the parents too as often parents will mutually agree to take turns for play, giving the opportunity to get some alone time during two remarkably busy weeks.

Playdate ideas are many from dress ups, building, board games, there are so many playdate ideas for kids that are guaranteed to be fun. For kids 5 to 12 years play dates are particularly important as playdates afford children to develop important crucial skills. After many shutdowns happening in the world, it is never more important to children to spend time socialising in real life circumstances to build friendship and confidence in the world around them.
