The Summer Holidays are nearly here and so are our December / January Programs with LEGO® and Robotics! Our Summer activities are held in our Hornsby Creativity Centre with Air Con for those hot summer days! Join us for the best School Holiday Programs in Sydney!

Keeping Everyone Safe in our Programs!
Here at Bricks 4 Kidz Hornsby, your children’s’ safety is our top priority!
After more than 100 days of lockdown, we can’t wait to start building with the kids. We’re opening our newest Bricks 4 Kidz Creativity Centre in Hornsby with increased precautions to follow the Departments of Health and Education.
Some of the additional precautions being taken at our Birthday Parties and Holiday Workshops include the following:
1) All campers will be temperature checked by a Bricks 4 Kidz staff member with a non – contact thermometer every day of camp before camp drop off.
2) All campers must sanitize hands before they are allowed to touch any LEGO bricks, camp supplies, or equipment in the camp facility.
3) Bricks 4 Kidz sanitizes supplies daily and throughout the camp day. Bricks 4 Kidz has added additional sanitation after camp stations throughout the day.
5) Bricks 4 Kidz has reduced their normal camp attendance size, thus allowing for additional distancing of campers.
6) Bricks 4 Kidz monitors national and local guidelines daily and will notify parents of any changes to above policies at least 24 hours in advance for each camp week.
7) We will offer FULL REFUNDS if we need to cancel School Holiday programs due to COVID.

Build a Fun Halloween Pumpkin with Lego® Bricks!
Let's build a Pumpkin this Halloween!

Here is a fun LEGO® Halloween project that you might want to try! A Halloween pumpkin that we found from LEGO’s Official Facebook page! This pumpkin only requires basic bricks and slopes, so if you have a decent LEGO collection you should have no problem building one. Mine turned out to be a bit rainbow coloured as I didn’t have that many orange bricks, but building the LEGO pumpkin was still a fun challenge. 😀
Here is a list of elements you will need to build your LEGO pumpkin, but please keep in mind that you can substitute many of them (for example instead of using a 2×8 brick you can use two 2×4 bricks or two 1×8 bricks). And again; don’t worry about the colors if you don’t have all the orange bricks needed – there is nothing wrong with an all red pumpkin or even a rainbow pumpkin! But if you do want to make your LEGO pumpkin all orange, you can pick up most of the required elements at the Online LEGO Pick-A-Brick section or at your local LEGO store’s Pick-A-Brick wall.
➡ STEP ONE – Building a LEGO Halloween Pumpkin: Although the picture doesn’t show that, I highly recommend building your pumpkin on a LEGO plate. It will be a lot easier to put it together, and if you want you can remove the plate at the end. All you need is a 10×10 plate or larger.
➡ STEP TWO – Building a LEGO Halloween Pumpkin: Now you start stacking up some standard 2×2, 2×3 and 2×4 bricks to start building up your pumpkin. Easy enough so far, right?
➡ STEP THREE – Building a LEGO Halloween Pumpkin: Now you start the next layer or bricks – please note that if you don’t have a 2×8 brick, you will do just fine with two 2×4 bricks, or some other combination.
➡ STEP FOUR – Building a LEGO Halloween Pumpkin: Here is where you will have to start paying close attention as from now on several steps will be included in each step. Notice how the side to your right has been built up before adding the next layer all around.
➡ STEP FIVE – Building a LEGO Halloween Pumpkin: More stacking of LEGO bricks. Again; pay close attention to all sides as there are several steps included here. If you make a mistake, just take it apart to the last step and start again. Hint: the left and ride sides are identical. 😉
➡ STEP SIX – Building a LEGO Halloween Pumpkin: I’m not sure why black is used for the 1×2 bricks as they don’t server any special purpose, nor are they going to be visible at the end. So if you want you can go ahead and use any color. Also, if you don’t have any more of the 2×3 inverted slopes, you can also use some regular 2×3 bricks.
➡ STEP SEVEN – Building a LEGO Halloween Pumpkin: Now you are starting to build up the top of the pumpkin, and also start shaping the face. Again; if you don’t have any 2×8 bricks, two 2×4 bricks, or two 1×8 bricks will work just fine.
➡ STEP EIGHT – Building a LEGO Halloween Pumpkin: Here you finish the nose and eyes and start building up the top. If you don’t have enough 2×2 inverted slopes, 1×2 inverted slopes work just as well. Notice that at the top you are starting to add the finishing slopes. Although you can’t see it clearly because the slopes are facing the back, the one in the middle is a 2×3 slope, and the other two are 2×2 slopes. Also notice that there is a gap at the top that will be covered in the next step.
➡ STEP NINE – Building a LEGO Halloween Pumpkin: And there you have it! A LEGO pumpkin with a big grin! You can top it off with a green, tan, or other color stem, and if you have a LEGO light-brick you can place it inside for some great effect! Now how about building another one? 🙄

AFTER THE WORKSHOP: TIPS TO HELP YOUR KIDS GET THE MOST OUT OF THEIR BRICKS 4 KIDZ ACTIVITY

A Bricks 4 Kidz class is not only fun (because who doesn’t love playing with LEGO Bricks?), but playing with building materials is one way to give kids a hands-on look at subjects they’ll learn in school.
Construction play has links to success in STEM concepts, which include science, technology, engineering and math. For example, when your child plans, builds then evaluates the results of their LEGO Brick project, they have gone through a simple version of the engineering process.
Of course, you want to set your child up for success. To help them get the most out of their Bricks 4 Kidz class, here are some things you as a parent can do to build on the things your kid has learned.
Talk to the teacher: Your child’s Bricks 4 Kidz teacher is probably your best resource, and they’ll be more than happy to chat after the session. Ask them what made your child’s face light up with excitement. It can also be helpful to learn what made your child struggle, and how they handled it. Regardless of how the class went, the teacher may have links, how-to handouts and fliers for local upcoming events to help you generate ideas.
Listen to your child: On the drive home, get a sense for what resonated with your child by asking open-ended questions. Ask them to tell you the names of kids they sat by, what activity they did first, the best or most interesting thing they got to work on at their class, and what they thought of their project — and if there was something they could do better next time.
At home, see if you can get them to “teach” you something they learned to build in class, and praise them for their effort. When your child gets a chance to play the expert and show off what they know, it helps them put into practice the things they learned while it’s still fresh in their minds.
Fun as a family: Look for a related but fun free-time activity you can do as a family. A trip to a hands-on science or engineering museum, reading books from the library, watching a kid-friendly documentary or trying new crafts can all make engaging follow-ups to a Bricks 4 Kidz class (while enhancing what they learned).
For more ideas, check out the Bricks 4 Kidz blog or head to the parenting section of your local library. Either can be a valuable resource for finding fun things to do at home, whether it’s a new building challenge that teaches a physics concept or a crowd-pleasing kitchen sink experiment.

Soft focus: Don’t overlook how after-school activities help kids build “soft” interpersonal skills. When they finish a hard project, it builds willpower. Conversations with kids from other grades and homerooms expand their social skills. Even if they struggle with the project, they have the choice of asking for help (communicating) or using their own resources to solve it.
When kids take part in enriching after-school activities, they become more confident in new situations. While technical and academic skills are key to building a bright future, well-developed people skills can be just as important!

Our mission is to become the preferred external provider of STEM education to the students and school systems in Sydney. STEM – Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics – and therefore, STEM education, are vital to the of our country and the future of our children.
We experience the benefits of these disciplines constantly in our modern lives. Today when people speak of “technology”, usually they mean computers and smartphones, but technological advancement goes back to the innovations of television, radio, microscopes, telegraph, telescopes, the compass, and even the first wheel. STEM is important, because it pervades every aspect of our lives.
While the term “STEM” may be new to you, its significance is well understood. A 2009 study by the United States Department of Labor listed the ten most wanted employees. Eight of those employees were ones with degrees in the STEM fields: accounting, computer science, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, information sciences and systems, computer engineering, civil engineering, and economics and finance. According to the U. S. Department of Commerce, STEM occupations are growing at 17%, while others are growing at 9.8%. Health care workers with associate degrees to doctors of medicine will average 20% more in life time earnings than peers with similar degrees in non-health care. A glance at 2010 starting salaries for engineers with $47,145 for civil engineers to $60,054 for chemical engineers is strong evidence that STEM related jobs can be financially rewarding careers for our children.
At Bricks 4 Kidz®, we emphasise the STEM disciples in all our programs. Our goal is to excite the kids about the possibilities of creating and building, and inspire them to dig deeper into these fields. As we say – they think its fun, and you’ll know its education!
